What is it we need your support for?

The Bükk Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired aims to assist the blind and poor sighted in four ways:

- Guided hiking

We employ devoted, sighted guides with excellent knowledge of the woodland area to lead the blind hikers and their sighted friends along safe routes. This is how we try to get the blind out of the concrete jungle of what used to be called ”The Steel City” - Miskolc. What awaits the hiker up in the hills is not only the outstanding natural beauty of the Bükk mountains, but also its magical climate, always a trait for maintaining good health. We hope this helps improve the poor physical condition of the visually challenged that often occurs as a result of no, or little, exercise. We are confident our tours will inspire these people to go hiking more often than before and make exercise a daily routine.

- School visits

We visit primary and secondary schools for one-hour long sessions, where we tell students of the special situation and everyday problems of the blind and partially sighted. By doing so, we wish to transform the pity hiding deep in the kids' soul to helpfulness.

- Audiobook production

Although we know the Hungarian Electronic Library and other foundations have published plenty of audiobooks, we don't think this is the end of the story. We possess written permission from established Hungarian authors to make audio adaptations of their books. What all these authors have in common is that their works haven't yet been published in this format. Our long-term goal is to involve authors who were born in Miskolc or are closely related to the city. Meanwhile, we are looking for local contemporary poets and novelists who need an audience. Then we are going to include authors that, despite living abroad, write in Hungarian and are likely to gain ground. Please note that the audiobooks we make are not for retail sale. Members of the blind and visually impaired community can download our stuff free from file sharing sites. This is how we try to help every one of them to find something to suit their taste, without laying on them a financial burden. The readers we have selected are all professional actors who do the job out of enthusiasm. We've managed to get legendary musicians to read out chapters written about themselves.

- Free legal advice

This free legal consultancy service is for anyone living with a handicap, not only for the blind and partially sighted. Complaints or proposals from hard-of-hearing and physically challenged persons are also accepted.
